Wring Out Your Psychic Sponge & Ring In the New Year

I have news for you:

Things are not what they appear to be.

You’ve probably heard this statement before, right? But, in this case, we are definitely leveling up.

You see, when you are a Highly Sensitive Person, an HSP, the way things appear—in other words, the way you have always believed them to be, the way you have always believed yourself to be—is simply not the way things are.

  • We are told every day that we are too sensitive. Wrong.
  • We are told every day that we need to be in control of our lives. Wrong.
  • We are told every day that we need people to understand how sensitive we are. Wrong.
  • We are told every day that what hurts us (our sensitivities) makes us stronger. Wrong.

The truth is that the very things we are told we need to have, need to do, need to be, and need to fix are nothing more than society’s misconceptions about what sensitivity really means. So, let’s start with a short inventory of commonly perceived HSP traits.

  1. You are empathetic.
  2. You are compassionate.
  3. You are understanding.
  4. You are sympathetic.
  5. You feel things that are unspoken.
  6. You know things/see things/smell things/hear things that others don’t.

We can probably all agree that these are typical indicators of high sensitivity. Which is exactly why I like to call them INDICATORS.

What difference does it make what you call them?

All the difference. Because when we thinking of them as sensitivities we are led by the scruff of the neck right back into that old belief that we are vulnerable, at risk, and a victim of our own natures, when nothing, and I mean nothing, could be further from the truth.

INDICATORS

Other Indicators of high sensitivity include things like:

  • panic attacks
  • depression
  • misplaced aggression
  • fear
  • PTSD
  • chemical reactions
  • social anxiety

Once again, we have been led to believe that we have these “conditions,” that we need to seek help for them because they are bad, and that they are the bane of our existence.

Wrong.

What if you were to see all these attributes, reactions, and emotional states as nothing more than energetic responses to your environment? What if, every time you felt anxious, you said to yourself, “Wow. This is an indicator of some kind of energy I am absorbing into myself?” What if you thought about the fact that maybe, just maybe, if you were not open to the energy, you would not be reacting to it?

Here’s what’s really going on.

Energy is everywhere, in all people, places, and things. It is everything and undeniable in the fact of its existence.

And we, HSPs all, are just like SpongeBob SquarePants. Going about the world absorbing all of it. Everything.  Sure, you’re having experiences, you might even be high-functioning, but more often than not, you also struggle to reach your goals or stay out of trouble or maintain relationships. You might be adorable as you do it, but still.

Wring out your energetic (psychic) sponge!Anyway, we HSPs are like walking, talking, human (as opposed to animated) energetic sponges. Our “psychic” abilities—in other words, our Intuitive Guidance System—has been turned off, shut down, or otherwise tuned out for as long as we’ve been alive in favor of our logic, common sense, and rational thinking.

Too bad it doesn’t work.

You see, all that good stuff—all that solid, heart-forward, innate inability to discern what’s REALLY going on around us? It turns into mush, muck, and mayhem because we absorb it like a sponge absorbs water without realizing what we’re doing.

We don’t realize that we’re taking on the energy of others. What energies??? Depression, fear, anxiety, etc. We don’t realize that we’re unconsciously absorbing these energies to our own detriment.

But the worst part? Even if we DO realize it, we don’t know how to stop. But not anymore.

How To Stop (How To Start)

What I’m about to impart is the first most critical tool in our HSP Toolbox. Without it, without applying it, you could be stuck in the muck forever. But here’s the thing….

  1. Being a psychic (energetic) sponge does not mean you have to go around like a feeling magnet.
  2. It also doesn’t mean you have to put up a wall/barrier/bubble/protective device to keep things out.
  3. INSTEAD, every time you experience an energy shift that’s uncomfortable, take a moment to experience it differently.
  4. Be SpongeSue or SpongeTom or SpongeVivian…and WRING OUT YOUR SPONGE BODY.
  5. Do it with your eyes open or closed, but visualize and FEEL how it feels to wring out all the energy you are picking up, or have picked up when you were at the gym, at the store, at the concert, or at your family dinner.

Remember, putting up walls takes a heck of a lot of effort.

Wringing out your psychic sponge takes none—and feels like absolute heaven.
